Partner Press Release • e-MFP
This year, e-MFP and Inclusive Finance Network Luxembourg (InFiNe) are delighted to welcome the Microinsurance Network (MiN) – an international multi-stakeholder platform that unites organisations and experts committed to advancing inclusive insurance – as a strategic partner in designing and implementing the Award.
Vulnerable people around the world face more frequent and increasing risks, including climate and health risks and economic instability so the theme of the European Microfinance Award 2025 (EMA 2025) “Building Resilience Through Inclusive Insurance,” could not be more timely.
The EMA 2025 highlights organisations that enable low-income and vulnerable people to build resilience and manage risk thanks to inclusive and effective insurance. The importance of expanding access to inclusive insurance has never been greater. Traditionally, low-income populations have relied on informal coping mechanisms to manage risks. Informal networks, such as family and community support, provide some assistance, but these resources can be unreliable or insufficient during widespread crises.
While these traditional methods play an important role, they are not enough to provide long-term financial resilience. A more structured approach to risk management is necessary, and insurance is a key ingredient in this. By providing financial protection against unforeseen events, insurance helps low-income households mitigate losses, recover more quickly, and build resilience against future shocks.
The EMA is a prestigious annual award, which includes a grand prize of €100,000 and two runner-up prizes of €10,000 each and focuses on a different topic each year since its first edition in 2006. It is presented by the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation, and Foreign Trade, and jointly organised by the Ministry, e-MFP, and InFiNe. In addition to the €100,000 grand prize, the award offers the winner and finalists global recognition, opportunities to scale their innovative solutions, and a platform to showcase their excellence in inclusive insurance.
As a member of both e-MFP and InFiNe, the Microinsurance Network brings valuable expertise to the development of the Award’s methodology and guidelines, drawing on insights from not only its members across the world, but also from its annual Landscape of Microinsurance series, the 2024 edition of which has just been published.
Matthew Genazzini, Executive Director of the Microinsurance Network, says
“The 2025 European Microfinance Award, ‘Building Resilience Through Inclusive Insurance,’ is a pivotal moment for elevating the role of insurance in global development agendas. Too often seen as the ‘forgotten’ financial service, inclusive insurance is, in fact, a transformative tool – one that not only strengthens the resilience of vulnerable populations but also fuels economic growth. By shining the spotlight on innovative solutions in this space, this year’s award will help ensure that insurance is recognised as a fundamental pillar of financial inclusion and sustainable development worldwide.”
The EMA application period opens 12th March and closes 10th April.
e-MFP is organising Application Guidance Sessions in three languages during which the e-MFP team will go over the Award process and reply to any questions that potential applicants may have.
All information on the Award will be available at www.e-mfp.eu, www.infine.lu and www.european-microfinance-award.com
